GREEN LANTERN #59 — the man who was almost Green Lantern.
Cover-dated March 1968, "Earth's Other Green Lantern!" starts from a question the Guardians of the Universe decide to answer. When the dying Abin Sur crash-landed on Earth and went looking for a successor, Hal Jordan wasn't the only worthy candidate within reach. There was another man, a physical education instructor named Guy Gardner. So the Guardians show Hal what would have happened if the ring had gone to Guy instead.
Along the way the issue retells Hal's own origin, with Abin Sur back on the page. John Broome wrote it, with Gil Kane pencils and Sid Greene inks inside. Kane and Murphy Anderson's cover puts the premise in a single image: Guy, grinning, lantern held high over a flattened Hal Jordan: "There's room for only ONE Green Lantern — ME!"
The alternate-history gimmick turned out to be a preview. Guy would later take up the ring for real in the comics, and on screen as Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner, now on HBO's Lanterns. Every version of that bowl-cut, loudmouthed Lantern starts here.
This copy grades CGC 8.0, Very Fine, with off-white to white pages. The book is bright, with the flaming red logo and green-and-yellow field holding strong color.
