HAND PAINTED Antique MASTER INK BOTTLE Stoneware J BOURNE & SON/P&J ARNOLD

Size 9.25\" high with a 3.5\" diameter base. Holds 1Qt [32 ounces] of liquid- this was originally meant as a MASTER INK bottle to be refilled. Circa early 1880\'s

This bottle has a SPOUT at the top and would originally have had a cork stopper [doesn\'t have a stopper now, but could be fitted with one easily]

EXTREMELY UNUSUAL salt-glazed warm cinnamon-brown stoneware which was HAND PAINTED in the 1800s to show a landscape scene. This is NOT a modern painting applied to an antique bottle- the bottle and painting are both from the same time period.

Painting features a rectangular inset of a river with a sailboat and a person on the boat. There are willow trees along the riverbank.

Surrounding this charming tableau are large ox-eye white daisies with yellow centers, and delicate fern leaves and foliage, all hand painted

The bottle itself has a background paint color of a matte greyish-teal blue which gets progressively darker towards the base.

This bottle has all the appropriate impressed markings which read:

This is still quite easy to read

These stoneware ink bottles were handmade and hand fired at their respective shops back in the day for sale throughout London, and shipped and carted throughout the UK. They were sometimes refilled, but often were chucked away and broken. Today they are very collectible, and a fun piece of Victoriana/history.

Nice and weighty, great quality.

Excellent condition, NO nicks chips cracks damage or repair to stoneware, in fantastic shape, no fading to paint. There is minor paint loss as to be expected for 140+ years- there are places here and there where the glossy stoneware peeks through, but the artwork itself is not lost.Paint is NOT chipping or flaking off- very secure.Adds to the charming antique look of the piece.
