This collection of Slavic ornamentation details the essential characteristics of Russian decorative art, in all of its glorious full color. The designs, gathered from the rich sources of symbolic, religious, and secular art forms in pre-revolutionary Russia, include some of the earliest examples of Novgorodian and Stoganov calligraphy, iconography, and architectural detail, as well as wood and bone carving, metalwork, pottery, porcelain enameling, glass making, jewelry and textile weaving.

Vladimir Vassilivich Stassov\'s classic work Slavonic and Eastern Ornamentation, published in 1887, from which many examples in this book have been taken, represents some twenty-five years of re-
search. An exhibition of Russian manuscripts dating from the 11th to the 18th centuries inspired him to study the various aspects of ancient Russian art: he was struck by the beauty and originality of the illuminated initials and general ornamentation of these early manuscripts and made copies of all that seemed remarkable.
Stassov, the son of a renowned architect, produced an invaluable history of Russian calligraphy and illumination. He was instrumental in proving that, in spite of Byzantine influences, the truly Russian designs continued to retain their unmistakably ethnic character as they developed throughout the centuries. The general introduction provides a brief history of the evolution of Russian art and lends to this beautiful collection a great practical value for all students of art and design.THE AUTHOR
Marina Bowater was born in 1920 one month after her mother, having fled from the Russian Revolution via the Arctic, arrived in England. She began her writing career in New York where she specialized in fashion. In the late 1950s she opened a small antique shop in London, which became a gallery concentrating on the arts of Imperial Russia. She brought these arts to the attention of Western Europe, for her gallery was the only one of its kind that specialized exclusively in things Russian. Marina Bowater now lives in the Cotswolds and writes about Russian art forms.
