Engraver, illustrator, painterCharles-Émile Egli known as Carlègle is a Swiss engraver, illustrator and painter, naturalized French, born March 30, 1877 in Aigle (Switzerland) and died in Paris (France) November 9, 1937.
From 1895, he attended the Geneva School of Industrial Arts for four years, in the class of Alfred-Louis Martin, before leaving for Paris where he arrived in 1900. He has a great practice in woodcutting and uses it to sell illustrations to periodicals.
Under the name “Carlègle”, he illustrated satirical newspapers such as L’Assiette au Beurre, Le Rire, Demain or La Vie parisienne, but also L\'Illustration, Cocorico, Fantasio, and numerous books and texts, classic or contemporary such as La Fontaine, Ronsard, Verlaine, Henri de Régnier, etc.
From 1905, he began to publish albums of engravings such as L\'Automobile 217-UU, and A Story That Ends Badly. In 1908, he began to create illustrations for books. In 1909, he participated in international exhibitions of humorous cartoonists (Paris, Copenhagen). His production did not falter in the 1920s, and he remained both chic and popular, producing for the Gazette du Bon Ton and La Vie Parisienne.
Charles Émile Egli died in the 13th arrondissement of Paris on November 9, 1937.
