19-inch Edo-period Japanese bronze umpan gong originally from Nandai-ji Temple’s Main Hall.


• Object: Bronze Buddhist Umpan (Cloud Gong)

• Origin: Nandai-ji Temple – Main Hall (南大寺金堂)

• Casting Date: February 1834 (甲寅春二月 – Kōin Year, Spring Second Month)

• Maker/Donor: 白雄 (Hakuo)

• Material: High-copper bronze alloy

• Diameter: 19 inches

• Weight: 16.6 lbs

• Period: Late Edo (approximately 191 years old)

• Condition: Excellent structural integrity, natural verdigris patina, legible inscriptions

Inscription Translation

The right-side inscription reads:

白雄立甲寅春二月

Translation: “Made by Hakuo in the Kōin year, Spring, Second Month.”

Kōin (甲寅) corresponds to 1834.

The central inscription reads:

南大寺金堂

Translation: “Nandai-ji Temple – Main Hall (Kondō).”
