Published at the height of Freedom Summer, while civil rights workers James Chaney, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman were still missing. Page 10 discusses them as possible victims; their bodies were found August 4, 1964.
Mississippi coverage runs through much of the issue: a history of lynching in the state, including the murders of Emmett Till and Mack Charles Parker; the segregationist “death list” of Medgar Evers and other leaders; a profile of Robert Moses and the Mississippi Summer Project; an interview with Myrlie Evers; Reconstruction-era officials including Hiram Revels; and notable Mississippians including Leontyne Price, Richard Wright and Lerone Bennett. Also includes Martin Luther King Jr. urging the GOP platform committee to aid Mississippi.
Contains frank reporting and period photographs of racial violence, as expected from a historical document of this era.
