Paris, under German occupation during the Second World War. 14-year old Edith and her parents are rounded up with all the other Jews in her neighborhood and deported to a concentration camp. Upon arrival, the girl is separated from her mother and father. An older doctor, a camp prisoner, designated as a \"political prisoner\" by the red triangle on his clothes, leads her into a barren treatment room. The man explains the peculiarities of the camp to Edith and also the many dangers lurking there. Edith\'s hair is shorn; she\'s handed prisoners\' clothing; and a number is tattooed on her left forearm. No longer a \"person\" (just a number: 10099), she becomes overwhelmed by the events going on around her. When she finally hears the noise outside the barracks, she runs to the window, only to see naked people being corralled by SS guards to their deaths; among them, Edith\'s parents. Taking on the identity of a recently deceased prisoner --- a \"black triangle\" or criminal, and not a Jew --- life for Edith will mean beatings and hunger, but not gassing. She will prostitute herself to survive. When Soviet POWs arrive at the camp later on, Edith is drawn to one of the men and they develop feelings for one another. When the Soviet officer confides in Edith that he and his men are planning an escape, she is forced to come to a quick decision as to whether she\'ll risk death or keep on with a brutal, collaborationist ---but nonetheless \"guaranteed\" --- survival under the Germans.
