Pair of oval framed prints, sold together as a set of two and not separated. Each depicts a group of women in wide crinoline-era gowns gathered in an interior, one seated at a table with flowers and a tea service, with draped curtains and a mirror in the background. Both sheets carry the printed caption LA MODE ILLUSTRÉE across the lower image, with Bureaux du Journal 56 rue Jacob Paris beneath it. La Mode Illustrée was a French fashion journal published in Paris from 1860 to 1937 from that address. The printing method and the age of these particular sheets have not been determined, and no claim is made about either.
Both prints are in gray and black monochrome on toned paper, with no hand coloring. The frames are oval, painted in a cream that reads closer to peach in person than it photographs, with a gilt inner lip and applied fruit, nut, and foliage ornament at four points around the perimeter. Both are glazed and fitted with hanging hardware on the reverse. The two frames match one another in size, finish, and ornament.
Both frames show weathering and wear consistent with age, including fading and unevenness in the paint, scattered spots and darkened areas across the surface, and chipping and small losses to the applied ornament, with a visible crack in the composition on one frame. There are a couple of white spots within the printed image area. All flaws have been photographed — please review all images closely before purchasing.
