And....this blanket chest was made!

A wonderful Large Primitive Antique 1802 Pennsylvania Dutch Wood and Hand Forged Iron Blanket Trunk Chest with Key

Painted front and sides. Hand forged iron handles and hinges. Interior has top side compartment with flip up wood cover.

In almost 225 years, there is going to be wear. I’ve tried to capture as much as I could in the photos to give a good representation of the piece, but I can’t take a picture of every little detail. Especially with a piece like this. I’ve taken the photos in natural sunlight to brighten and show details to be zoomed in on. If there are certain areas you would like to see specifically, just message me. only allows me to load a certain number of photos apparently.

Structurally still very sound and solid. One top hinge has a nail through the hinge swivel point. This could be removed and a smaller piece of metal could be used instead. But it serves its purpose. There is a little play in the hinges, but not too bad. Open and closes firmly, but with ease.

Great patina on the iron and also on the worn and smoothed wood. Top has nice grain with almost a pinkish hue. For its size, it’s not too heavy. Most likely all pine construction. Faintly, over keyhole, 1•8•0•2 can be seen in red. Sides have best remaining paint as shown. Handmade nails throughout. The two white things in the photo of the open chest are just tissue to cushion the metal and top. Forgot to remove before I took the photos.

Chest measures 4ft-1/2” x 22-1/4”L x about 20”H all around.

The key measures 5-1/2”L

The handles each are about 6-1/2”W

Just a great piece of early Americana. I hate to part with it. It looks great in my home, but will certainly do the same in someone else’s. I’ve used it as decor only in a spare room and never stored anything in it. Most of the time it’s been covered with a tablecloth for protection.

Item is for local pickup only, but I will travel a small distance to meet and deliver. However, you must prepare to make the complete trip in case I’m unavailable to travel on that given day.
