Marc Chagall (1887–1985) is one of the most beloved and instantly recognizable masters of twentieth-century art. Born into a humble Jewish family in Vitebsk, in present-day Belarus, he carried the imagery of his childhood into a dreamlike universe entirely his own: village rooftops, fiddlers, and lovers drifting above the earth. Settling in Paris among the avant-garde, he absorbed Cubism and Fauvism while refusing to belong to any movement. Picasso himself is said to have remarked that after Matisse, Chagall would be the only painter left who truly understood color. His deep midnight blues and radiant yellows seem lit from within, giving his work the glow of stained glass, a medium he would later master alongside the celebrated ceiling of the Paris Opéra, murals at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and canvases in the Louvre, MoMA, and the Centre Pompidou.Chagall was equally one of the great printmakers of his era. Working with the legendary Mourlot atelier in Paris, he embraced lithography with a painter\'s passion, producing some of the most celebrated and sought-after lithographs of the twentieth century. His prints carry the same tenderness and luminous color as his paintings, weaving folklore, memory, and modernism into images of quiet poetry, and they remain among the most treasured works on paper by any modern artist.
