Late Classic Maya / Ulúa-Region Polychrome Quadrupod Bowl with Figural Scene
Southeastern Mesoamerica, probably Honduras, Ulúa–Comayagua region, ca. AD 650–950. Large earthenware bowl painted in cream, red-orange and dark brown/black, with an elaborate seated or crouching anthropomorphic figure occupying the interior basin, surrounded by glyph-like and geometric motifs. Additional figural and zoomorphic imagery extends around the interior and exterior walls. Originally supported on four ceramic feet, now lost, with their attachment scars preserved on the underside. The extensive painted program reflects the sophisticated regional polychrome traditions that developed along the southeastern frontier of the Classic Maya world. Fragmentary and restored, with a major repaired break, areas of fill/retouching, surface abrasion, pigment loss and losses to all four supports.
