From the preserved collection of Rolando “Roly” Fernandez. Most items from this collection are signed by him. Rolando “Roly” Fernandez is a larger-than-life figure whose life moves from Miami custom-car fame to prison, art, and spiritual rebirth. Known as “Miami’s Kustom King,” he built his name in South Florida through bold custom cars, creativity, and presence in the auto world. His story later took a dramatic turn with a federal drug conviction, though he has maintained his innocence and told me that his love for his mother and his Higher Power would never have allowed him to commit that crime. During his years in prison, he became a painter and sent his mother more than 100 paintings, along with over 7,000 magazines and more than 500 books, all of which she lovingly preserved. In my personal experience, Roly is joyful, playful, and always noticing synchronicities. He speaks about God, his friends, and his supporters with such emotion that he often gets goosebumps and watery eyes, revealing a man driven as much by love and faith as by legend.
