NGC ( VF ) Aurelian AD 270 -275 Aurelianianus / Antoninianus
Aurelian, born c. AD 214, is best known today for reuniting the Roman Empire after its fracture during the reign of Gallienus. In the year 274, the winter solstice fell on 25 December. The Emperor Aurelian decreed that the Natalis Solis Invicti, the Roman sun festival would be held on that date every year instead of changing date. Early Christians, who in those days worshiped in secret to avoid persecution could not celebrate the birth of Jesus in the open begancelebratingit on the 25th to blend in with this Roman celebration.

The aurelianianus was introduced by Aurelian as a replacement to the Antoninianus in 274 A.D. and struck until 293 A.D. They were of an improved quality of silver plating (4.3% vs. 2.5%) and part of Aurelian\'s monetary reform. Today, the terms are often used interchangeably by dealers and collectors.
