This beautiful watercolor by Esther Hunt is in Mint condition. It shows a lovely young Chinese girl from Chinatown San Francisco lighting a lantern. It is signed \"E Hunt\" in the lower right hand corner.
Esther Anna Hunt (1875-1951)--born in Nebraska--is known for her paintings of Chinese subjects, especially portraits and figures she did from models that she found in Chinatown in San Francisco.
She moved to San Francisco to study art at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art, where she financed her education by painting scenes and portraits of the residents of Chinatown, primarily featuring children in traditional garb. She also studied art in New York with William Chase and in Paris.
This painting measures 16 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches sight in a 22 1/2 x 19 inch frame. The frame has a few minor flaws but is overall in excellent condition.
