Retta's Roman candle life was lit off on December 7, 1934. She was cutting cake for her seventh birthday when the announcement of the attack on Pearl Harbor came over the radio. She graduated from Richmond Professional Institute (the undergraduate predecessor to VCU) and later received a master's degree in art history from Johns Hopkins. For several years, she operated an art supply store in Florence Italy and an art gallery in Fredericksburg.
A Depression baby with a phenomenal work ethic, she continued to work in art and culture throughout her life. Those lucky enough to have visited her would certainly have thought they had stumbled into an art gallery and a cat rehabilitation facility. She always took in strays and usually had two or three feline fans in residence. She took in stray people as well. Such was her heart. She was a staunch progressive Democrat, a lifelong Episcopalian, and member of St. George's in Fredericksburg.
