This engraved proof bank check was produced for the Commercial Bank of Pennsylvania, a Philadelphia institution active during the mid‑19th century when private banks issued a wide range of financial instruments. Printed by Huffy & Danforth of Philadelphia and New York, a respected security engraving firm, the piece reflects the high standards applied to bank forms intended for approval or archival reference rather than circulation.
The paired vignettes are classic period symbolism. At left, a sailor at the helm represents maritime commerce and trade, while the allegorical female figure at right, holding a cornucopia, symbolizes prosperity and financial stability. The open date line (“18__”) and entirely blank fields confirm this as a printer’s proof of form, preserved in unused condition. Such proofs were typically discarded after approval, making surviving examples desirable to collectors of obsolete banking material and engraved financial ephemera.
