Schaw filled the composition with an entire moonlit possum family clinging to a tropical tree above crashing Caribbean surf. A coiled snake, dense jungle foliage, breaking waves, and an enormous full moon turn the poster into a wonderfully strange nocturnal ecosystem. The metallic foil catches the light throughout the moon, clouds, water, animals, and foliage, giving the artwork far more dimension in person than a standard paper edition can convey.
The imagery is a direct and delightfully weird nod to Phish’s “Possum,” and the connection became even better when the band closed the final set of the weekend with the song under a full Mexican moon. Sometimes the poster gods get the setlist exactly right.

About the Artist:Pete Schaw is a Seattle-based illustrator and poster artist known for richly detailed concert artwork filled with wildlife, natural environments, and just enough visual strangeness to keep things interesting. His work for Phish, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Goose, Primus, and other touring artists combines old-school gig-poster craftsmanship with intricate contemporary illustration. This Riviera Maya piece is especially well suited to his style. It is lush, nocturnal, slightly dangerous, and crawling with possums.
About the Event:Phish: Riviera Maya 2024 brought the band back to Moon Palace Cancún for four nights of music from February 21 through February 24. The run included a 35-minute “A Wave of Hope,” a massive 40-minute “Chalk Dust Torture,” the return of “Chalk Dust Torture Reprise” after 142 shows, and a moonlit final night featuring “The Howling,” “Bathtub Gin,” “Ruby Waves,” and the perfectly placed set-closing “Possum.” We attended the run, and “electric” barely covers it. Four nights of Phish beside the Caribbean is already ridiculous. Add monster jams, a full moon, and a possum poster shimmering on foil, and subtlety has officially left the resort.
