Amazing California impressionist style painting by Cerise Johnson ofthe lagoon formed at the mouth of the Carmel River (just north of Point Lobos) with pelicans in the water and the historic Portola-Crespi cross on the hill above the river.
The Portola cross was originally erected in 1769 to signal the Spanish ship the "San Jose" which was supposed to resupply the 64 member expedition who had traveled over land north from San Diego to find Monterey. The San Jose never arrived (lost at sea) and the expedition trekkedthe 400 miles back to San Diego. The cross was re-erected in 1944 and is now a popular hiking and scenic area just south of Carmel by the Sea.
This was painted in 1998 and is unframed.
Cerise's paintings have been shown in galleries in Carmel, Big Sur and the MontereyPeninsulasince the 1990's including Ventana and the Post Ranch Mercantile in Big Sur.
