Title: Rare Stupa Excavated Sukhothai Buddha Head. Sukhothai Period. Sacred Temple Relic.
Overview:x We are pleased to offer this exceptionally rare copper alloy image of a fragmented Sukhothai Buddha Head, excavated from a collapsed Stupa at a temple precinct in the Sukhothai province of north central Thailand. The figure was created during the late Sukhothai Period, and at which time was stored in a stupa structure by Buddhist Monks, placed in large clay Vats along with other similar figurines of different sizes. The piece was primarily cast from a special process of \'smelting\' metal, in accordance with the Buddhist Scripture, obtained from the smelting of sacred metals and religious artifact fragments. The piece is extremely well modeled and measuring 8.5 inches (21.59cm) in height.Description:x > A superb relic of a Sukhothai Buddha Head, once part of a complete portable meditating Sakyamuni Buddha image, rendered in traditional \'Sukhothai\' style.
Cast in bronze the head, with oval face, portrays a refine remote appearance with the eyes lowered in a serene meditative expression. Sharply outlined curls of the head dip into the middle of the forehead, arched eyebrows set above almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and well proportioned lips are slightly incised. The head is covered in small pin-shaped hair curls, surmounted by a short domed \'Ushnisha\', and crowned with a rather tall flame finial. A subtle indentation separates the forehead from the hairline, and long pendulous earlobes frame his face.
Lost wax cast, the head has a natural aged reddish-dark brown patina of molted variations, with a verdigris patina developing on the surface throughout. The core within the bronze has fallen out and visible at the base.
