For sale is an exceptionally rare, pre-WWII architectural wood construction toy: Set No. 3 by the Commonwealth Toy Co. of Merrimac, Massachusetts. Dating from the mid-to-late 1930s, this regional New England manufacturer produced high-quality, flat-paneled interlocking building sets that are incredibly difficult to find today.Unlike common vintage building sets, this is a massive, deluxe flagship set containing 460 total pieces.
Condition & Details

• Piece Count: Massive inventory of 460 pieces. Perfect for building extensive structures, multi-room cottages, or adding to an existing antique architectural toy collection.
• Aesthetic & Colors: Features a beautiful, classic 1930s color palette designed to mimic New England colonial architecture. Includes white and brown interlocking wall panels and green-dyed roof pieces. The natural wood grain beautifully shows through the original aniline/vegetable dyes.
• Packaging: Includes the original wood box featuring dovetail corners. Box measures 14" by 25" by 6" high. Note that the box is packed full. Top is not original. I made it to protect the contents. Also features the authentic, high-contrast black and white paper label identifying the Commonwealth Toy Co. Merrimac, Mass. imprint. The label shows much wear appropriate for its 90-year age but remains readable (see photos).
• Instructions: Please note, the original paper instruction sheet is not included. However, the interlocking tongue-and-groove/notched mechanism is highly intuitive, allowing for endless creative freedom.
