Offered is an exceptionally scarce 1989 Fleer Bill Ripken FF #616 Whited Out variation, graded PSA 10.
The infamous Bill Ripken FF error is one of the most recognizable stories in the hobby, but this particular card is not the typical FF error or even a typical Whited Out example.
According to the PSA population report, there are only 16 PSA 10 graded examples identified as the Whited Out variation. However, the PSA registry shows that these 16 cards are not necessarily identical. Several appear to be what collectors commonly describe as White Scribble examples rather than the true Whited Out correction. Many try to fake this and PSA is super critical and stringent on this card in particular.
What makes this particular example especially unusual is the distinctive airbrushed or translucent Whited Out appearance. Unlike the examples that appear to have been completely covered with opaque white correction material, the vulgarity underneath the correction can still be faintly seen through the surface.
To my knowledge, I have not seen another PSA 10 graded Whited Out example with this same appearance. I’ve heard of one other but have never seen it.
The PSA 10 population has also remained essentially unchanged for a considerable period of time, making this a very thinly traded and impossible card to replace.
Card Ladder currently places the card at ~$20k, but this is an unusual situation where a traditional market value is difficult to establish.
There are:
• Only 16 PSA examples officially classified as Whited Out
• A potentially smaller true population when the registry is examined closely
• No other examples currently listed or available
• Extremely limited transaction history
• No established market for this specific airbrushed version
• A distinctive appearance that is unique within the population
• A PSA 10 population that has remained essentially unchanged
I am in no hurry to sell. I am simply reshaping my collection and would move this card at a price that I believe appropriately reflects the scarcity and uniqueness. I once owned all of the major versions and corrections in PSA 10, and here’s your chance to own probably the hardest one to find.
