A remarkably rare and highly collectible Victorian / Edwardian novelty figural desk bell in the form of an Owl's Head. Crafted from early, lightweight celluloid ( designed to replicate carved bone/iv), this piece dates to 1900/1910 and is of likely German origin
Unlike common cast metal variants, this scarce celluloid edition features an exposed clockwork mechanism on the underside with it's original wind-up key handle.
Very Good overall condition - bell works perfectly but there is a small split on the beak and one just above the beak. (please see photos). Also there are holes under each ear? I am not sure whether they are supposed to be there or not? The eyes are slightly different colours. The winding key mechanism appears to be stuck/frozen, but I'm concerned about trying too hard to move it. Maybe it's just fully wound?
