Emperor Commodus (AD 177–192)
This impressive bronze sestertius was struck during the reign of Emperor Commodus, the son and successor of Marcus Aurelius. Commodus ruled Rome from AD 177 to 192 and is remembered as one of the empire’s most controversial emperors. His reign marked the end of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty and inspired the fictional emperor portrayed in Gladiator. Large bronze sestertii such as this served as the principal high-value bronze denomination in everyday Roman commerce and remain among the most collectible Roman imperial coins.
The obverse features a laureate portrait of Commodus, while the reverse depicts a standing female deity holding attributes of peace and prosperity (the exact reverse legend is difficult to read from the photos and would benefit from the full attribution).
