A very scarce Victorian smoker’s knife by George Butler & Co of Sheffield in excellent condition with beautiful premium Mother of Pearl scales. George Butler & Co were one of the most prolific Sheffield cutlers of the 19thand 20thCenturies. They trace their lineage back to 1774 and William Butler. The company became “George Butler & Co” around 1843, acquiring the Key trade mark in around 1882 from Steer & Webster, dating this knife to the post-1882 period.
Measures approximately 3 1/8 inches long overall, closed. Pen blade measures approximately 1 ¼ inches long, edge only. Long pull nail nick. Obverse tang stamped with Key brand over “G. Butler & Co.”. There is no “Sheffield” or “England” marking (it was automatically assumed that everyone would know where they were located) meaning this was made between 1882 and 1891. File/nail pick measures approximately 1 ¼ inches long, measured along th spine. Reverse tang stamped identical to the pen blade. Button hook measures approximately 1 9/16 inches long, identical tang stamp. There is a combined cigar pricker/cutter that corresponds with a hole in the knife to allow for the cutting of cheroot tips, stamped “Cigar Knife”. To the underside sits a pipe reamer measuring approximately 2 5/8 inches long (together with the button hook). Quite stunning premium Mother of Pearl scales secured by four pins, obverse with oblong unengraved shield. Brass liners and spacer and a black horn spacer at the cheroot hole end.
Good snap to all blades and tools. Condition is excellent with the lightest of age stains and scratches to the blades. Scales are excellent, with no chips or cracks. A stunning example of a Victorian smoker’s pocket knife.
