THOSE TEETH.
There is a reason Smilodon became the animal everyone pictures when they hear Sabertooth Tiger.
The upper canines on this life size replica are approximately 17 cm / 6.7 inches long. They dominate the skull exactly as they should, extending dramatically beyond the lower jaw when displayed.
Put the skull on its black steel stand and the sabers become the centre of the display. It is immediately recognisable from across a room.
Not Actually A Tiger
Although most people know it as the Sabertooth Tiger, Smilodon fatalis was not a tiger at all.
Smilodon belonged to the extinct machairodont cats and lived across the Americas during the Pleistocene. It had a heavily built body, immensely powerful forelimbs and one of the most specialised skulls of any large cat.
The famous elongated upper canines are only part of the story. Smilodon\'s skull and jaw were adapted to allow an unusually wide gape, giving those extraordinary teeth the clearance needed to function.
A Skull Built Around The Sabers
Look closely and Smilodon is very different from a modern lion or tiger skull.
The lower jaw is shaped to accommodate the huge upper canines, while the cranial proportions and muscle attachment areas reflect an animal with a highly specialised feeding system.
That unusual anatomy is exactly why a full-size Smilodon skull works so well as both a dramatic display piece and a comparative anatomy or palaeontology model.
THE STEEL DISPLAY STAND
We wanted the stand to make the skull look better, not turn it into a permanently mounted ornament.
The custom black painted steel stand uses a cradle-style support designed around the skull. There are no mounting holes drilled into the replica and no permanent attachment.
The skull simply sits securely on the cradle and can be lifted away whenever you want to examine or display it separately.
Against the matte bone skull, the simple black steel virtually disappears visually, leaving the Smilodon and those enormous canines as the focus.
