🌎 Atlas History
Step into Shakespeare’s world through the typography, portraits, and decorative details of the First Folio.
This vintage Yale University Press volume reproduces the 1623 collection, Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies. Prepared by Helge Kökeritz, with an introduction by Charles Tyler Prouty, this copy is the third printing, published in January 1955.
The original First Folio brought together 36 plays seven years after Shakespeare’s death. Eighteen had never appeared in print before, including Macbeth, The Tempest, and Twelfth Night—works that might otherwise have been lost.
Here, the historic spelling and page layouts offer a different way to explore these familiar stories, from the courts of kings to the streets of Romeo and Juliet’s Verona.
This is a 1955 facsimile reproduction of the 1623 First Folio, not an original seventeenth-century book.
