• The Artist: Shepard Fairey is one of the most influential urban artists of our generation, famous for his "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" campaign, OBEY Giant sticker movement, and the historic 2008 Barack Obama "Hope" poster. His works are permanently housed in institutions like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the National Portrait Gallery.
• The Content: This portrait utilizes an original photograph taken by Bobby Grossman during the golden era of the New York underground music scene. Fairey transforms the photograph into his signature graphic vector style, overlaying a structured grid sequence with rich blues, vibrant contrasting reds, and elegant hits of metallic gold ink on heavyweight cream Speckletone paper.
• The Subject: David Byrne, the enigmatic frontman and legendary band leader of the Talking Heads. Byrne is widely celebrated for pushing the boundaries of art-pop, post-punk, and new wave music. This image beautifully captures Byrne's sharp, intellectual gaze and iconic youth aesthetic during the band's formulation.
• Historic Meaning & Artist Perspective: The print pays homage to the raw creative explosion centered around the historic CBGB music club in Manhattan during the mid-1970s. Reflecting on the band's influence, Shepard Fairey shared: "I've been a fan of the Talking Heads since I was a kid... I remember seeing the film Stop Making Sense on HBO as a teen and thinking the Talking Heads singer, David Byrne, was very weird and very fearless to dance around in an absurdly oversized suit." This collaboration encapsulates the intersection of street art, historic photography, and revolutionary music history.
