This piece is an original signed antique photogravure (or toned lithograph) of La Femme à L’Éventail by French artist Abel Faivre, created around 1901 and first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français that year.

The lithograph is beautifully held beneath its original antique cylinder glass, set within a handsome tiger oak frame.

Antique cylinder glass is a softly slightly rippling pane made by the mouth‑blown cylinder method. As molten glass was shaped, slit, and flattened, each sheet retained the gentle waves naturally created. These slight beauty marks remind us of long-ago craftsmanship. And, antique glass is highly coveted too.

Tiger oak, also called quarter-sawn oak, refers to a very specific cut of white oak wood that reveals flame-like grain patterns resembling the stripes of a tiger. This magical effect is created by cutting the wood perpendicular to its growth rings, a method that highlights the stunning ‘stripes’ in the grain. This method also increases the wood’s stability and resistance to warping over time. To me, tiger oak is exceptionally beautiful and whenever I see it, I pick it up immediately! You should too! 🥰

Tiger oak became popular during the late 19th to early 20th century and was often used in Victorian, Arts & Crafts, and Edwardian furniture and frames. It was considered highly luxurious and durable. Because of this it a was a favorite of fine cabinetmakers.

This lithograph is not a copy. It is an authentic, signed period piece. Due to the age of the lithograph, there are some imperfections as you can see in photos. There is a mark on her chin and some speckle spots on her chest. There are zero rips and no tears. The frame is in exceptional condition and she still presents beautifully. Regardless of the state of the litho, the true value is in the frame, as Antique tiger wood frames are becoming harder to source.
