“The Sounds of Silence” • CBS EP 5655 • 7” 45 RPM • French Pressing, 1966
Autographed by Both Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel • GFA Authenticated
Offered here is a stunning piece of 1960s folk-rock history: an original 1966 French pressing of the Simon & Garfunkel four-track EP “The Sounds of Silence” (CBS EP 5655, 7” vinyl, 45 RPM), bearing the authenticated signatures of both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. The iconic picture sleeve features both artists in their classic mid-1960s look, with the bold French market designation “N° 1 AUX U.S.A.” — a testament to the duo’s transatlantic chart dominance at the height of the folk-rock explosion.
Paul Simon’s signature appears diagonally lower left on the record sleeve, executed in black ink. Art Garfunkel’s autograph is signed diagonally upper right, in blue ink. Both signatures have been individually forensically examined and authenticated by GFA.

Paul Frederic Simon and Arthur Ira Garfunkel first met in elementary school in Queens, New York, in 1953, when both were cast in a sixth-grade production of Alice in Wonderland. By 1957, as teenagers performing under the name “Tom & Jerry,” they had their first charting single. After reuniting under their real names in 1964, they signed with Columbia Records and quickly became one of the most celebrated musical partnerships of the twentieth century. Together they won seven Grammy Awards, sold over 100 million albums worldwide, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Paul Simon has additionally been inducted as a solo artist and has earned 16 Grammy Awards in total, while Art Garfunkel’s crystalline tenor voice became one of the most recognizable in popular music history.

The title track was written by Paul Simon and originally recorded acoustically in March 1964 at Columbia Studios in New York City for the duo’s debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. After the album initially underperformed commercially, producer Tom Wilson — without the duo’s knowledge — overdubbed electric guitars, bass, and drums onto the acoustic track. This remixed version was released as a single in September 1965 and rocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending January 1, 1966, prompting Simon to return from England and the duo to hastily record their second album, Sounds of Silence, released January 17, 1966. The song was later featured prominently in Mike Nichols’s landmark 1967 film The Graduate, cementing its place in American cultural history. In 2012, the Sounds of Silence album was added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
The remaining tracks on this EP are equally significant: “I Am a Rock” reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966; “Homeward Bound” peaked at No. 5; and “Richard Cory,” Simon’s adaptation of the Edwin Arlington Robinson poem, remains a fan favorite and staple of the duo’s catalog.

Both signatures display normal characteristics consistent with the known exemplars across all measured parameters including style, line quality, slant, spacing, base alignment, stroke formation, and character formation.
