Gertrude Stein (February 3, 1874 – July 27, 1946) was an American novelist, poet, playwright, and art collector. She moved to Paris at 29 and lived there the rest of her life, becoming most famous for hosting a Paris Salon that would be instrumental in the rise of art and literary Modernism. Her memoir, published in 1933, vaulted her to fame, with the phrase, \"Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose.” 

Six years later, her children’s book, ‘The World Is Round’ was published in New York with the dedication “To Rose Lucy Renée Anne d\'Aiguy, a French Rose” — the book opens with the line, “Rose is a Rose.”

The book’s illustrations are by the famed children\'s book artist Clement Hurd, and his original blue-and-white art is printed on the rose-pink paper that Stein insisted upon. 
The classic pink pages were achieved by full-bleed printing on oversized stock before trimming the assembled book block. A white \'print color\' was achieved by ‘reversing out’ the image on the paper. Interestingly, large, solid fields of color are anathema to commercial printers, and in this achievement, one can sense the love and devotion brought to the book’s production by all parties all the way to the finish.
