A long-time customer favorite from Crosman Seed — a three-species cool-season blend built around top-rated perennial ryegrass cultivars for quick germination and lasting curb appeal. The perennial ryegrass cultivars are selected for improved disease resistance, drought tolerance, and overall lower maintenance, making this an ideal mix for typical home lawns where a balance of fast establishment, year-round performance, and resilience matters more than any single specialty trait.Full sun to partial shade.
The three-species advantage:This mix combines perennial ryegrass (about 74%), Kentucky bluegrass (about 12%), and creeping red fescue (about 12%) — each species pulling its own weight:
- Perennial ryegrassdrives fast establishment (5–10 day germination), dense fine-textured cover, and traffic tolerance.
- Kentucky bluegrassbrings the rhizomatous root structure — underground stems that send up new shoots and let the lawn fill in bare spots and recover from wear on its own. It also adds the classic deep blue-green color and improves overall genetic diversity.
- Creeping red fescueextends the mix's range into shaded and lower-pH soil conditions, performs well with less fertilizer, and adds another layer of genetic diversity.
Don't overlook the bluegrass:Twelve percent Kentucky bluegrassby weightworks out to more thanthirty-three percent by seed count— because KBG seed is much smaller and lighter than ryegrass or fescue seed, a relatively modest weight percentage translates into a meaningful share of the actual seedlings in the soil. That's enough Kentucky bluegrass to deliver real rhizomatous, self-repairing behavior in the established lawn rather than just trace genetic diversity.

Growing Tips:For best results, sow when soil temperatures are 50–65°F — early fall is ideal in cool-season climates, with spring as a secondary option. Keep soil consistently moist (light watering 1–2x daily) until germination, then taper to deeper, less frequent watering as the lawn establishes. Soil pH should be in the 6.0–7.0 range. A starter fertilizer at seeding and a follow-up feeding 4–6 weeks later will help the Kentucky bluegrass establish, since it germinates more slowly (14–28 days) than the ryegrass (5–10 days). The lawn will appear ryegrass-dominant in the first season and develop more of the bluegrass character over the following year as the rhizomes spread.
Mowing:Mow at 2.5 to 3.5 inches once established. Keep the mower blade sharp — perennial ryegrass has fibrous leaves that can shred under a dull blade.
