THE ATLANTA HISTORICAL BULLETIN: John M. Davidson CSA Letters 1862-1865
John Davidson was from a prominent Western North Carolina family whose grandfather was an officer in the American Army during the Revolutionary War. His first cousins were North Carolina governor Zebulon Vance and General Robert Vance.John M. Davidson enlisted in Company C, 39th North Carolina Infantry in October 1861 and was elected 1st Lieutenant. John and his wife, Julia, had three small children at the time of the war. He fought with the 39th until he was captured at Tullahoma in December 1862.
The Davidson later wrote the history of the 39th for the magnificent North Carolina Troops series. The editor, Jane Bonner Peacock, selected his war letters \"for their humanity.\" They provide an insight to a soldier\'s life away from his loved ones on a very personal level.
The letters cover the period 1862-1865 and the book includes a number of photos in addition to editorial notes. 116 pages
