The most impressive feature is the elaborate period binding. The book is bound in rich red leather with marbled paper-covered boards, raised spine bands, and exceptionally detailed gilt floral and ornamental tooling extending across the spine. “TENNYSON” and the date 1893 are gilt-lettered directly onto the spine. The text block also features bright gilt page edges, giving the volume a particularly handsome shelf presence.
Condition: Antique condition with expected age-related wear. The leather shows rubbing and wear along the spine, raised bands, corners, and board edges, with some surface wear to the marbled paper. The gilt decoration remains notably strong and attractive. Interior pages show age toning and occasional spotting/foxing consistent with a book more than 130 years old. Please carefully review all photographs for the exact condition and binding details.
This is an especially decorative example of late-Victorian Tennyson, combining an 1893 printing, illustrated contents, gilt-edged text block, and highly ornate leather binding—a substantially more visually impressive copy than an ordinary cloth-bound edition.
