DESCRIPTION
A Sawankhalok stoneware sleeve vase of rounded form rising from a low splayed foot. The exterior is decorated in underglaze iron with large floral medallions surrounded by scrolling foliage beneath a pale cream glaze. A stylized border encircles the lower body, while the base is left unglazed in the traditional Sawankhalok manner. An attractive example of Thai export ceramic production despite the restored rim.
COLLECTOR\'S NOTE
Sawankhalok wares were produced in north-central Thailand during the 14th to 16th centuries and were exported extensively throughout Southeast Asia. Floral-decorated vessels of this type are valued for their bold painted designs and their importance within the regional ceramic trade.
