Croquemitaine, best known in English as the Bogeyman, is a legendary figure in French folklore used by parents to frighten misbehaving children. While his appearance varies wildly from household to household, he is commonly depicted as an amorphous or monster-like poltergeist.
The most famous adaptation of the character is found here in this satirical fantasy novel La Légende de Croque-Mitaine. The book was written by the French author Ernest Manuel l\'Épine (under the pseudonym \"Quatrelles\"), freely translated by Tom Hood, and spectacularly illustrated by the celebrated French artist Gustave Doré.
L\'Épine’s novel turns the scary bogeyman into a rich, comedic parody of medieval folklore. The story is set in Charlemagne\'s France and follows a warrior maiden named Mitaine. Mitaine sets out to conquer the \"Fortress of Fear,\" defeats the mythical creatures guarding it, and eventually becomes the page for the legendary knight Roland.
Although the covers show wear from age, the binding is tight, the text blocks clean, and the illustrations breathtaking!
