Set of 3 Antique Hand-Colored 19th Century American Cityscape & Landscape Engravings
A Beautiful, Ready-to-Hang Matching Trio of Historic Americana — Published by D. Appleton & Co.
About the Collection
Up for sale is a stunning, decorator-matched trio of three (3) authentic 19th-century antique steel engravings featuring exquisite, detailed hand-coloring. These historic views beautifully capture the industrial pride, bustling maritime commerce, and scenic vistas of early America. Published originally by the renowned D. Appleton & Co., this curated set includes three scenes:
• Print 1: “Lockport, Erie Canal” — Depicts the architectural marvel of the canal lock system with laborers active along the waterways and the town rising in the background.
• Print 2: “City of New York (From Brooklyn Heights)” — A sweeping panoramic view of New York Harbor teeming with sailing vessels, early steamships, and the burgeoning Manhattan skyline. Features the early construction of the historic Brooklyn Bridge visible on the right.
• Print 3: “City of Boston (From South Boston)” — An elegant shoreline perspective of Boston’s busy harbor, anchored by prominent sailing vessels in the foreground and the historic city skyline in the distance.
All three engravings are in excellent antique condition. The hand-coloring remains soft, natural, and well-preserved. The sheets show minimal to no notable foxing or discoloration within the sight windows. The matching gold wood frames show light, honest vintage wear and minor surface scuffs consistent with age, displaying beautifully. The original dust-cover paper backings on the reverse show typical tearing and brittleness from age, but all structural hanging wires remain firmly intact and ready for display.
