Soviet Chess Set from the 1950s — Mordovian Design (GULAG System)
A Soviet chess set from the 1950s, manufactured within the system of correctional labor institutions of the USSR (Mordovia). This is the canonical “Mordovian” design of that period, widely known and highly valued among collectors. A true manifesto of utilitarianism and minimalism.
The set stands as a direct antagonist to the classical Staunton style. Its innovative, avant-garde silhouette deliberately rejects decorative elements and “bourgeois ornamentation” in favor of pure practicality — a choice dictated both by ideology and by the necessity of meeting enormous public demand. The pieces have a slender and elegant silhouette. Flat, broad bases provide excellent stability, while the slim construction ensures excellent visibility on the board: the pieces “breathe” and do not obscure one another. The pieces are fitted with new felt pads on their bases, in a bright azure color. The original lacquer and paint finish of the pieces has been preserved without modification; signs of use are present. Particular attention should be paid to the form of the Knight — angular and rugged.
The set carries a rich cultural and historical context, serving as a symbol of the distinctive Soviet chess school. The white pieces have a honey-amber tone with moderate, honest signs of age. The black pieces have a deep charcoal-black color. Complete set of 32 pieces. The original wooden chessboard, which also serves as a storage case, bears a factory star-shaped stamp and the year of manufacture (1959) inside, allowing its origin to be precisely identified.
Note: The board has fairly extensive signs of use. Changes to the lacquer and paint finish are present, along with chips, scuffs, and cracks, as shown in the photographs.
