Description:
Genuine U.S. Navy aircraft launching system RELEASE ELEMENT, obtained from the USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74).
This is NOT the large holdback bar. It is the much smaller release element associated with the aircraft carrier launching/holdback equipment.
The military identification for this type of part lists it as:
ITEM: ELEMENT, RELEASE
Part Number: 417599-1
CAGE: 5L063
NSN: 1720-00-869-5453
Federal Supply Class 1720 – Aircraft Launching Equipment
The release/holdback system restrains the aircraft while it is positioned and prepared for a catapult launch. This small component is part of that system; it should not be confused with the considerably larger holdback-bar assembly seen attached beneath carrier aircraft.
This example measures approximately 3 inches tall × 1½ inches across and weighs approximately 1 pound.
Original markings remain visible on the ends. Additional markings appear to include 1998, 672-23 and 417599.
This piece retains its original white finish and shows scratches, chips, staining and other evidence of use. It has not been refinished or restored.
Provenance: Acquired as a used flight-deck/aircraft-launching component from the USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74).
An unusual piece of genuine U.S. Navy aircraft-carrier equipment for a naval aviation, aircraft carrier, military or USS John C. Stennis collection.
Sold as a historical collectible/display item only — not for operational use.
