ABOUT THIS SIGN
Union Oil's premium motor oil line, advertised the way the oil companies actually advertised in 1959 - with a film star and an endorsement line. Petroliana and pin-up collectors are two of the biggest crowds in the hobby and this plate sits squarely in both, which is rarer than it sounds. The 1959 Union Oil Company of California line at the foot dates it precisely. Two things worth knowing before you buy: the signature is part of the printed artwork on the face, not a hand-signed autograph; and a soft blur has been added to the photographs over part of the figure so the listing meets 's image rules - that is in the photos only, the plate itself is untouched and is exactly as described above.
Marked on the face: a facsimile "Marilyn Monroe" signature across the face, "STILL LOVES Royal Triton!", "ROYAL TRITON Motor Oil" on the black band, and "Union Oil Company of California - 1959" in small type at the foot.
Size: approximately 12" in diameter (305 mm), measured by the seller.
CONDITION
Judge the condition from the photographs - the sign is shown from every angle, including the reverse and the mounting holes, and nothing is cropped out. On porcelain of this age, fine specking in the enamel, small chips at the edges and wear around the mounting holes are normal and are not faults. After decades of age and storage a sign may also sit slightly warped or a little bent rather than perfectly flat - it still hangs and displays fine, and you will not notice it once it is on a wall. This one is not cracked and has not been restored, repainted or touched up. Want a close-up of a particular area, or an exact measurement, before you buy? Message us and we will take it the same day.
