This striking historical realism piece features a powerful depiction of a defensive stand by Confederate troops during the American Civil War, originally painted in 1882 by renowned military illustrator William Gilbert Gaul (1855-1919). This print is believed to be part of the released production by the Southern Art Publishing Company in 1907 featuring high-quality photomechanical lithograph reproductions of Gaul's paintings. Gaul was highly celebrated for capturing the grit, emotion, and realism of frontline conflict rather than just idealized battles. He focused heavily on the psychological and physical toll on individual soldiers, capturing raw moments of desperation, exhaustion, and camaraderie.
This is a very RARE turn of the century print, and it is in very good condition with the exception of a few minor water spots in bottom right corner and top left corner (price reflex water spots). The colors remain bold and vibrant and the text title line along the bottom margin is clean and fully legible. It comes framed in a vintage wood frame that features a clean gold inner trim that complements the earthy tones of the print. The frame measures approximately 20 inches tall and 23.5 inches long. The width of the frame is approximately 2 inches.
