The F. W. Woolworth Company published these inexpensive instruction manuals in the United States to promote their own brand of yarns and threads sold in their five-and-dime stores. They were printed during the early twentieth century to give home crafters reliable patterns for practical garments during periods of wartime economy and thrift. The booklets were produced in large numbers on cheap paper with staple bindings, relying on clear diagrams and straightforward text rather than luxury presentation.
Home crafters and homemakers used them sitting by the parlor window or at the kitchen table to make sweaters, socks, and shawls for their families. They followed the written instructions step by step to create warm clothing and decorative items without spending much money on store-bought goods. Over time, as mass-produced clothing became cheaper and more widely available, these instructional pamphlets fell out of everyday use and were largely discarded.
