Product Overview:
Up for sale is a beautiful, authentic 1920s Slingerland May Bell 4-string tenor banjo. This instrument is a classic artifact of the pre-war Chicago jazz era. While it lacks a front-facing brand name—which is standard for trade and department store catalog instruments of this generation—the distinctive multi-colored wood marquetry "compass" inlay pattern on the resonator back identifies it as an original Slingerland factory build. The banjo features premium vintage hardware components, including an early curved "hot dog" metal armrest and a highly desirable Pre-War Grover "Presto" tailpiece stamped with "PATENT APPLIED FOR". It is currently configured as a 4-string tenor layout using a 5-string tailpiece configuration, which was a standard factory or player modification during this era.Condition Report:
- Banjo: The instrument is in fair to good vintage condition considering it is nearly a century old. The multi-ply maple rim and neck display a wonderful natural amber patina with expected scuffs, surface scratches, and edge finish wear from age and honest play. The original natural skin head remains intact but shows cosmetic discoloration and darkening where the player's hand rested. Metal brackets and tension hooks show some natural oxidation and tarnish, giving it a great historic look.
- Hardshell Case: A vintage black hardshell case is included to protect the instrument during shipping. Please note that the case hinges are broken and will require repair or replacement if you intend to use the case for active travel. The latches are present.
Note to Buyers:
This is an antique stringed musical instrument. It is being sold as-found and as-pictured. It may require new strings, setup, tuning adjustments, or minor luthier detailing depending on your personal playing preferences.
