Bring a touch of nostalgic Americana into your home with this rare, authentic Vintage 1970s Artex Hobby Products \"Liquid Embroidery\" Scarecrow Pattern Kit!
Printed on premium, non-woven Pellon fabric, this collectible DIY project features an adorable, folk-art scarecrow duo perfect for autumn, Halloween, or year-round country farmhouse decor.
This pattern sheet was specifically designed and distributed by Artex Hobby Products, Inc. out of Lima, Ohio
this is a vintage fabric painting pattern created for their signature \"liquid embroidery\" ballpoint paint tubes.
Unlike woven fabrics (like cotton or linen) which are made by weaving threads together in a grid, Pellon is manufactured by chemically or thermally bonding raw fibers directly together into a sheet. It looks and feels somewhat like a dense, smooth, felt-like paper, but it is entirely flexible, sewable, and machine washable.
Why is it used for this Artex craft?
During the height of the \"Liquid Embroidery\" fabric painting craze in the 1960s and 1970s, Artex frequently printed their ready-to-paint patterns directly onto pre-cut panels of non-woven Pellon instead of traditional canvas or linen. It was highly favored for several reasons:
- No Paint Bleeding or Wicking: Because Pellon is non-woven, it lacks the tiny \"grid gaps\" and thread paths of standard fabric. When you applied the thick Artex ballpoint tube paint, the ink sat perfectly on the surface without bleeding outside the lines or weeping into surrounding threads.
- Perfect Stiffness for Wall Art: Pellon provides built-in structure. It holds its shape rigidly without wrinkling or sagging. This made the finished painted scarecrow picture incredibly easy to frame, stretch over cardboard, or hang directly on a wall as a flat decoration without needing backing material.
- No Fraying Edges: Because the fibers are bonded randomly instead of woven, you can cut Pellon into any shape you want (like cutting out the contours of the scarecrow or the fence) and the edges will never fray or unravel. You don\'t need to hem or finish the borders.
- Durability: Even though it feels thin and light, Pellon is highly resilient. It allowed crafters to scrub or wash the finished piece gently without tearing the base project apart.
