The Story: The painting depicts a quiet rural farm scene at dusk. As the winter evening approaches, two pairs of mallards are drawn to the glowing lights of the farmhouses and the open water of a small lake just beyond the farm. They face a choice: rest here for the night or push onward through the cold dark sky.

Terry Redlin (1937–2016) was one of America’s most popular and widely collected wildlife and Americana artists.Early Life and BackgroundBorn and raised in Watertown, South Dakota, Redlin grew up with a deep passion for the outdoors, spending his youth fishing, hunting, and exploring the woods and prairies. He originally aspired to be a forest ranger; however, at age 15, he was disabled in a motorcycle accident and lost one of his legs. Unable to pursue forest ranging, he pivoted entirely toward his next love: art. He later earned a degree from the St. Paul School of Associated Arts and spent 25 years working in commercial illustration, graphic design, and art direction before transitioning to a full-time painter in 1979.
