Upon moving to Detroit for business in the early 2000s, wequickly immersed ourselves in the local art community. One of the first peoplewe met was Dr. Cledie Taylor and a brief introduction blossomed into years ofprofound mentoring and friendship. After visiting our home to view ourcollection of African and African-American art, she graciously agreed to curateand appraise a portion of our extensive collection that total more than a 1,000pieces. Dr. Taylor is world-renowned for her vast knowledge across variousmediums, having taught both art and fashion design. She was constantly indemand. Yet, despite her busy schedule, she remained a subtle yet powerfulpillar of Detroit’s art community. A founding member and former Director of theArts Extended Gallery, her influence has shaped the city’s cultural landscapesince the 1950s.You will find some of those appraised pieces here in KyeremaAfrican Artifacts along with other vintage pieces.
