Check the pictures. Along the selvage, there are some cuts (they look like cuts, not tears). I think someone may have intended to use this as fabric yardage (until I realized this was probably an antique shawl, I was going to make a jacket from it).
This textile may be a 19th-century antique wool jacquard paisley shawl, commonly used as a piano or table throw.The pictures do not do this piece justice--the colors are rich. There is an Intricate, large-scale teardrop paisley (boteh) and floral motifs woven in rich rust, orange, red, beige, and cream tones. The center motif features a contrasting dark center medallion typical of large Victorian and late-19th-century piano shawls. It is likely that this shawl was woven on a mechanical jacquard loom to imitate hand-woven Indian Kashmir shawls.
