Vintage plate from B/G Sandwich Shops. Most likely a bread or ‘sandwich’ plate due to its size. This particular Shenango mark was used from the 1930s into the 1950s, approximately.
B/G Sandwich Shops (also spelled B-G) was a nationwide American restaurant chain that first appeared in the early 20th century. By 1920, the company operated in 40 cities across the country, stretching from California to New York. B/G was known for its motto, \"A meal a minute,\" and was an early pioneer of the fast-food concept, offering quick lunches, consistent uniform restaurant designs, and a strict no-tipping policy, long before chains like McDonald\'s popularized the model. In a 1931 book titled \"Dining in Chicago,\" the author praised B/G for their popular three-decker toasted sandwiches, especially the \"B-G Special\" made with various meats and mayonnaise dressing. The chain remained active at least into the 1950s.
Good condition. No chips or cracks. This is a used plate and shows utensil scuffing. It also has gray marks around the rim and discoloration on the back that I was not able to remove with careful cleaning. Please see the pictures for more information and to help with your decision.
This plate measures 7 1/8\" wide.
