Vintage Japanese color woodblock print after Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) depicting “Hodogaya: Shinmachi Bridge” from the celebrated Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō series.
The original Hiroshige composition was designed in the 1830s for the Hōeidō edition of the Tōkaidō series. This example is a later traditional woodblock printing of that design and is not being represented as an original 1830s Hiroshige impression.
The print appears to have been produced using traditional woodblock methods on thin fibrous Japanese-style paper. Printing characteristics include visible color penetration and image show-through on the reverse, along with gradated color and characteristics consistent with block printing. Hiroshige\'s printed signature, title inscriptions, and publisher/seal elements from the original design are present.
No separate modern publisher, printer, carver, remake, or reproduction stamp was located. The exact printer, publisher, and date of this particular impression are unknown due to the absence of documented provenance. Based on the physical characteristics and our examination, it is being offered conservatively as a vintage 20th-century Japanese woodblock print after Hiroshige.
