This is a rare team photograph (print) of the Sharm Scheuerman coached 1960-1961 Iowa Hawkeye basketball team. This looks like a photograph, but it\'s a gloss print and all the signatures are the player\'s signatures but they are facsimile. This shouldn\'t discourage you from purchasing, as this was a very special Iowa Hawkeye team and finding any 1960-61 team basketball pictures is quite rare. This particular team photograph appears to have been used as an advertisement for WMT Radio - the radio station which broadcast Hawkeye basketball games.
The 1960-61 Iowa Hawkeye basketball team had the nickname the \"Hustlin\' Hawkeyes\"; they finished 2nd in the Big Ten and 8th nationally. However, they never received an invitation to the NCAA tourney due to the limited nature of the 24-team tournament at that time. This Hawkeye team may have had a chance at postseason play, but 4 of the 5 starters were ruled academically ineligible mid-season. The team still did well despite the suspensions and rallied around the lone remaining starter - future NBA Hall of Fame player and all-time winningest NBA Hall of Fame coach - Don Nelson (pictured second from the left). The Hawkeyes started 12-1 before the suspension and finished 18-6.
This team also had another future NBA Hall of Famer, Connie Hawkins, but per NCAA rules freshmen were not allowed to play at the varsity level and why not pictured. In addition, coach Scheuerman had an assistant coach on his staff by the name of Don King who would later coach NBA greats Mel Daniels and Larry Bird at Indiana State.
Coach Sharm Scheuerman - former standout Iowa basketball player (one of 13 Hawkeyes to have their jersey retired) - he was thrusted into the Iowa head coaching position after the unexpected death of coach Bucky O\'Connor in 1958. At the time he was the youngest NCAA basketball head coach in history at 24 years old - he and Bob Knight are currently tied at 24 as the youngest in history.
Also pictured are two former Iowa Hawkeye football quarterbacks - Matt Szykowny (the only Iowa QB to beat Michigan and Ohio State in the same season) and Robert McCauley.
As you can see, this 1960-61 Hawkeye team had exceptional talent. This is the only Iowa team to have two NBA Hall of Famers, and there are fewer than 10 college teams that can claim that, making this an extra special piece of Iowa Hawkeye history and college basketball sporting history.
