Vintage Japanese Masakari – Restored & PreservedOffered here is a vintage Japanese masakari, a traditional Japanese axe associated with forestry, woodcutting and mountain work.This example has a particularly interesting head with a pronounced traditional profile, visible forging texture and markings on both sides.One face carries a stamped/engraved Japanese marking. The opposite face has an unusual series of four symbols formed from individual round punch marks. I have not been able to definitively identify their meaning. They may represent a maker, workshop, owner, regional identifier or another form of traditional marking, but rather than make an unsupported attribution, I am leaving their interpretation open to the next owner. They make this a particularly interesting piece for further research.I restored this axe with the goal of preserving its age and character rather than making it look new. The head was carefully cleaned while retaining the original forge texture, staining, pitting and patina. The cutting edge was restored and sharpened.The original aged wooden handle was also cleaned and preserved rather than replaced. It retains the wear, discoloration, marks and character accumulated through years of use.Important condition note: There is a small crack in the wooden handle near the axe eye/head, shown in the photographs. The head is currently fitted securely, and I have personally chop-tested the axe successfully. However, because of the age of the handle and this crack, I am selling it primarily as a collectible/display piece rather than recommending it for prolonged or heavy chopping.Anyone intending to put the axe back into regular working service should personally inspect the handle and consider replacing/re-hanging it before heavy use.This is an authentic old tool and consequently shows imperfections consistent with age and use, including forge texture, oxidation staining, pitting, scratches, wear and handle discoloration.
